Customized environmental technology for the new TÜV NORD site
As part of the expansion of its testing facilities, TÜV NORD Systems GmbH & Co. KG and PfB GmbH & Co. Prüfzentrum für Bauelemente KG have built a new, state-of-the-art testing center for fire protection and other tests for the door, gate, window and façade industry at the Verl site.
GARANT-Filter GmbH was commissioned with the planning, delivery and commissioning of a customized flue gas cleaning system (RGR) for the standard-compliant and low-emission performance of fire resistance tests – turnkey and state-of-the-art.
Demanding test conditions require reliable technology
TÜV NORD Systems’ test centers test the fire behavior of a wide variety of construction elements. These include doors, walls, glazing and cable and pipe penetrations. Applications range from the construction industry to shipbuilding and the railroad sector.
Exhaust gases with temperatures of up to 1,200 °C are produced during these tests. These contain various pollutants and must be reliably cleaned – even under changing operating conditions.
Goal: Clean air despite high levels of pollution
The new exhaust gas purification system has been designed to reduce these emissions permanently and safely – even under varying operating conditions and high thermal loads.
In addition to the direct extraction of the oven exhaust gases, the hood exhaust air was also captured. In addition, a ceiling extraction system ensures that smoke is extracted from the hall. This creates a safe and low-smoke working environment.
Innovative technology in detail
The flue gas cleaning system is based on the proven principle of dry sorption cleaning. It removes both dusty and gaseous pollutants – completely without water or wet chemicals. Further technical features are
-
Dry sorption filter system with automatic additive dosing for targeted pollutant removal
-
Targeted mixing of air flows (furnace exhaust gases, hood exhaust air, hall smoke extraction) to bring hot exhaust gases to suitable temperatures – without conventional cooling systems
-
Frequency-controlled booster fan for stable and standard-compliant extraction in all operating conditions
-
Comprehensive insulation of the entire exhaust air path – thermal and acoustic – to protect against heat loss, corrosion and noise
-
Free-standing chimney with vibration damping, adapted to local requirements
-
Safety devices such as spark detection with automatic extinguishing, fire detection and manual extinguishing devices
Successful implementation and outlook
The plant was commissioned between fall 2024 and early 2025, and TÜV NORD Group now has an efficient, safe and environmentally friendly solution for cleaning exhaust gases from fire tests at its Verl site.
This means that the new test bench is ideally prepared for future requirements – both technically and in terms of environmental protection.
